Our school canteen offers healthy, affordable food options for students. Learn about our canteen opening hours, our menu and how to order lunch.

There are four basic functions the canteen performs at Russell Vale Public School.

1.  A service for the children: The canteen is performing a service to the children by providing fresh, nutritious lunches and mid-morning snacks.

2.  Educating children in good food habits and good hygiene:  The canteen exists as part of the school, inside the school grounds, and the children make use of it as part of their daily school routine.  Whether inside the classroom or out, children learn from every school activity - including the operation of their canteen.  Intentionally or not, the canteen is teaching children about food and hygiene by its example.

3.  Profit making:  This is an important reason for most schools operating a canteen.  Money raised from the sale of foods goes towards the purchase of more educational equipment in the school, in turn benefiting each child.

4.  Providing a pleasant social occasion:  Parents assisting in the canteen have an opportunity to meet others, socialise and discuss the experiences of their children.

The canteen can best fulfil these four roles by:

(a)  selling only nutritious foods which are prepared and served hygienically.

(b)  encouraging participation of parents in the canteen.

(c)  ensuring good management so that a profit can be made on all of the food sold.

Canteen orders are placed online via Flexischools. Students are to drop their canteen bag in the slot provided at the canteen on the morning of ordering.

Canteen opening times

The canteen is currently able to operate 5 days per week, however, the canteen relies on volunteers to be open and if volunteers are not available it will be closed for that day. Want to volunteer?

The role of the volunteer is easy and fun! We require 2 volunteers each day from 10:45am – 2:00pm. Duties include helping children with their lunch orders, handling money, preparing food, basic cleaning and restocking and compiling the daily banking. All new volunteers are given on the job training and continued support if needed.
